The first Poker tournament of the year which was also the first Poker tournament in the WPT series to be played in Ireland is finished but the best Irish placed player was Ronan Gilligan who managed a very creditable third place worth €74000. We reported earlier in our poker tournament news section how you could qualify for this tournament through online poker sites and that is exactly what the 33 year old from Galway did winning a seat for the tournament worth €2500 plus hotel accommodation and some spare cash. Disappointed to be sent packing in the last hour of the poker tournament Ronan is quoted in the poker tournament news as saying “I blew up in the end” but then how disappointed can you be after pocketing €74000? The winner of the tournament was David Shallow from London who walked away from the City West hotel in Dublin with a cheque for €222,280 and an entry to the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas worth another €20,000. Online poker to become legal in the USA?

The big question being asked in the general poker news is whether we shall shortly see legalised online poker in the USA or not; as it currently stands the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act) prohibits the transfer of funds by banks to online casino and online poker sites but it does not actually prohibit online poker or online gambling itself and of course many US residents have found a way around through third party transactions although that is still technically still illegal. The big question however is whether online poker is a game of skill or luck as the UIGEA quotes the words of a bet or wager which is defines as “the staking or risking by any person of something of value upon the outcome of a contest of others, a sporting event, or a game subject to chance” which can clearly catch a game of roulette but does online poker come into that same category? General Poker news has learned that there are a couple of court cases due to be heard in the USA which involve those arrested for processing of payments and are being contested along the lines of poker not being a game of chance. The cases are to be heard in March and the result will be fully reported here in the general poker news pages. In the meantime we still have the ridiculous situation where many of the top poker players are being sponsored by online poker companies in the major tournaments and we all know that there are many qualifiers which are played online which can provide entry to the major tournaments. The business is worth many millions of dollars and although this poker news will not affect the average Irish online poker player, the outcome of the cases could change the face of online poker dramatically.

The Irish Open Poker festival continues to be in the Irish Poker news and although qualifying tournaments have been going on for some time it is still not too late to win a seat by qualifying at Paddy Power Poker. In last years tournament the winner outlasted 160 other online qualifiers to pick up the prize but in doing so also won the Irish Open itself worth a cool €550,000 so if it can happen once it can happen again. Epic Poker League in the poker news with lifetime card

There is a good chance that you have never heard of the Epic Poker League but they are in the general poker news in the USA for granting their first lifetime player card. The Epic Poker League is trying in a way to become the equivalent of the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) holding regular tournaments which are open to invitees only and to get invited you need to hold a card in a similar way to golf and you can get a card by earning points in the tournaments. The lifetime card has been awarded to Doyle Brunson not only for his winnings which amount to over $6 million but also for his services to professional poker. General poker news has learned that Brunson is credited with bringing poker back to the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas together with other “card sharks” known as the Texas Rounders and making it more popular and accessible. Responding to the award in the poker news Brunson typically stated that he thought the award unnecessary but at the same time it was nice to be remembered for what he and others went through to get the game where it is today. Brunson may be best known for his poker book “Super System” in which he explains poker strategy and helps people understand the game but at the end of the day as he puts it himself “The game of poker is about people, and you have to be able to understand people to play poker.” Although Brunson is not quite as active as he once was the owners of Epic are quoted in the poker news as saying that he is the games statesman and his contribution over the years are timeless. Asked whether he would be more active on the poker tours Mt Brunson replied to the poker news that he would be unlikely to play in more tournaments stating that getting older was making it more difficult to get through a long grind and that he prefers cash games.

Independent enquiry announced in Irish poker news into Full Tilt Poker

We have already reported in our Irish Poker News about the bad effects that the withdrawal of the license of Full Tilt Poker has had on the Irish operations which has 400 staff working in Dublin under the name of Pocket Kings but it is still not clear where this is all leading but what is for sure is that several other online poker operators are looking at what happened and trying to restore confidence in their players. The license which was issued by the AGCC (Alderney Gambling Control Commission) who withdrew it back in September after a tribunal had found that Full Tilt Poker had contravened several rules and there were also allegations from the USA that it had created false sites to handle cash from customers in America in contravention of the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act) but the result was reported in the Irish poker news that players could not get their money out as it was not there. Following on from this the internet poker company PokerStars has tried to allay fears of its players by stating that player’s funds are kept separate from other company funds and has promised to more transparent. PokerStars is also licensed by the AGCC who currently does not require funds to be separate although this could change following an announced independent review. At onlinepoker.ie we think this is a good step forward and we are still pleased to recommend them but if you have any doubts as a player then there are always the alternatives of listed companies such as Paddy Power Poker or Ladbrokes Poker who are listed on stock exchanges and are subject to stringent controls. The other two online poker sites that we list have not been in the poker news and they are 888 poker who are also listed and Party Poker which is part of the Bwin Party group both of which are again listed on stock exchanges in Europe. What will happen to Full Tilt remains to be seen but we shall keep reporting progress on our Irish Poker news pages.

In this week’s poker tournament news we would like to take a look at Poker Stars poker who we believe probably offer the greatest range of poker tournaments around with massive weekly prize funds; if you like poker tournament play then Poker Stars is definitely the place for you. Poker Stars runs the tournaments on Eastern US time but they cater specifically for Irish poker players by starting for example the Sunday Kick Off at 08:00 ET which is a convenient 14:00 for us, entry is $109 and the guaranteed prize pool is $75000, so keep your eyes open on the Poker Stars poker tournament news sections. If you are more of a night lark then for the same $109 you can enter the Sunday re-buy tournament which has a prize pool of $200,000 but the really big one is the Sunday Million which is believed to be the richest weekly poker tournament in the world and although the buy in is $215 there is a guaranteed $1 million in the prize pool and the winner will always get a six figure sum; there are of course satellite tournaments during the preceding week which gain entry to the main tournament for much less. Also in the poker tournament news at Poker Stars is the ladies only section called Poker Stars Women that offers poker tournaments to female players only the best of which is probably the Women’s Sunday which is a $55 entry tournament with a prize pool of $10,000 and again there are various satellites in the poker tournament news that will gain you entry for much less. For poker tournaments there are few if any better places to be than at Poker Stars.
